Types
Solar collectors include flat plate collectors and evacuated tube collectors. Flat plate collectors, which consist of a dark flat-plate absorber of solar energy, a transparent cover, a heat-transport fluid and a heat insulating backing, are the most common solar collectors. The absorber is composed of a thin absorber sheet backed by a grid of fluid tubing which is placed in an insulated casing with a glass or polycarbonate cover. Heat is transferred from the absorber to an insulated water tank by means of fluid circulation through the tubing. To collect heat for space heating or domestic hot water, evacuated tube collectors have many evacuated borosilicate glass tubes to heat up solar absorbers and solar working fluid.
