Solar Water Heating System

3. The required water temperature from the solar water heating system.

The minimum efficiency of the solar water heating system is determined by the amount or temperature of hot water required during winter, while the maximum efficiency of the system is determined by the need to prevent the water from being too hot during summer.

Types
A solar water heating system fall into two main categories: passive solar water heating system and active solar water heating system.
The integrated collector storage (ICS or Batch Heater) system is a special type of passive system, where the tank functions as solar collector and storage. The heater is generally installed on the wall or roof of the house, and relies on convection or heat pipes to circulate water or heating fluid. It is seldom pressurized and usually to deliver water through gravity flow.

Compared with plate and tube collectors, this system is more efficient and less costly.
An active solar water heating system uses a pump to circulate water. There are two types of active solar hot water system: direct active system and indirect active system. The former pump water directly to the collector and back to the storage tank, while the latter pump transfer fluid whose heat is transferred to the water in the storage tank. As the pump should only operate when the water in the storage tank is not as hot as the fluid in the collector, so a controller is needed to turn the pump on and off.

Additionally, there are many other system characteristics that distinguish different designs, for example:
1. The location of the collector: roof mount, ground mount, wall mount
2. The location of the storage tank
3. The method of heat transfer: open-loop or closed-loop
