Working Principle
Solar water heating systems include storage tanks and solar collectors. They fall into two main types: active and passive. The active solar water heating systems have circulating pumps and controls, while the passive solar water heating systems don't.
Most solar water heaters need a well-insulated storage tank which has an additional outlet and inlet connected to and from the collector. In two-tank system, the cold water is preheated when it passes through the solar water heater. In one-tank system, the back-up heater is combined with the solar storage in one tank.

Three Types of Solar Collectors for Residential Applications
1. Flat plate collector
A glazed flat plate collector is an insulated, weatherproof box consisting of a dark absorber plate under one or more covers. An unglazed flat plate collector, which is typically used for solar pool heating, contains a dark absorber plate, without a cover or enclosure.
2. Integral collector storage system
An integral collector storage system, or a batch system, features one or more black tanks or tubes in an insulated box. The solar collector first preheats cold water. Then the water continues on to the conventional backup water heater, offering a reliable source of hot water. As the outdoor pipes may freeze in cold weather, the system should be installed in mild-freeze climates.
3. Evacuated tube solar collector
An evacuated tube solar collector contains parallel rows of transparent glass tubes, each of which has a glass outer tube and metal absorber tube attached to a fin. This collector is frequently used for U.S. commercial applications.

Two Types of Active Solar Water Heating Systems
1. Direct circulation system
The system work well in freeze-free climates. Pumps circulate household water through the collectors.
2. Indirect circulation system
The system can be used in freezing climates. Pumps first circulate non-freezing, heat-transfer fluid through the collectors and a heat exchanger.
